What should a timesheet report look like? 

The timesheet report is one of the most important reports for professional services companies as it combines all the information related to time tracking in the system. In short, timesheets were made to show managers:

  • the time an employee has spend on all billable and non billable tasks in a form of time tracking summary, 
  • the costs and incomes generated by billable work on commercial projects, 
  • an information on the number of hours and payment needed to be included in the invoices for the customer, 
  • the productivity of particular employees, teams or activities and projects, 
  • information on time offs, 
  • comparison of capacity and logged time to make sure that time tracking is accurate and all the planned hours turn into real work, 
  • the overall results of Jira time tracking and its impact on a project. 

Why are these features so important for time tracking?

These features are essential for both COO and CFOs, as they allow them to oversee the profitability and utilization metrics, monitor the time tracking data, and see whether the company is in a good shape or not. What’s more, timesheets connected with resource planning may show how plans met with reality. 

However, does Jira have all of these features capable of gathering the time tracking data in a single spreadsheet?

Does Jira have timesheet reports?

If you have already found this article, you probably know that Jira is commonly used for project management (including Jira time tracking) and, broadly speaking, for gathering the information on the time spent on various projects. If you are a manager, you would probably like to analyze that information in detail and use it for Jira resource management (or Jira service management in general).

However, here’s where things become a bit more complicated, as Jira is not the best choice for timesheet reports. 

What features can a manager use in Jira timesheet reports? 

If you are a manager, we have bad news for you: Jira timesheet reports are very limited. 

As a manager, you can use Jira’s features to: 

  • check the progress of a particular task or a project for a time logged on the issue, 
  • approve timesheets of individual employees or request their correction (no wages or accounting is included), 
  • oversee recent records from teams and employees. 

That’s where Jira’s timesheet features end.

What timesheet features are not available in Jira? 

To add an insult to an injury, Jira also lacks numerous tools you, as a manager, would probably like to use on a daily basis to track employee performance. In other words, the use of this app can leave you with no information you need to make decisions. 

What features are missing in Jira?

  • productivity and time reports that allows you to see whether the actual output of employees matches your expectations, 
  • some types of reports for time tracking (i.e. time tracking for a person or a team) that are widely used for billing and calculating wages, 
  • Jira resource planning and capacity management that allows managers to realistically calculate the availability of resources, 
  • project accounting, wages, budgeting and other financial options used for charging the customers and calculating budgets.

  • User Workload Report - shows how much work a user has been included in Jira resource allocation, and how long it should take, 
  • Version Workload Report - shows how much outstanding. 

Where to find these reports? 

These reports can be found in a view of a particular project, under the Reports button. There you can select numerous reports available for a given operation.

However, if you are an employee looking for their reported hours from the last week, you can find them in a Kanban board in the My Work tab. 

Where can I get Jira timesheet for a particular user? 

Still, Jira timesheet reports by users can be found in other Jira timesheet apps, such as Primetric. For example, in Primetric you can simply go to the Reports sections and click on Timesheets.
